what will happen in just 26 days if he and congress can't make a deal on the so-called fiscal cliff. a source of great concern for so many people, everyone's taxes will go up, will go up if there's no deal. let's go live to our white house correspondent dan lothian. he's on the scene for us over at the white house. how did it go, dan? >> reporter: well, wolf, we've seen the president do this before in the past whenever he's locked in negotiations with lawmakers. he heads out on the road, either goes to a backyard or sits down around a dinner table to put pressure on congress. that's what he did today when he went to falls church sitting down with the santana family. their parents who also are employed live in the household with them. so if taxes do go up on middle class americans, the overall hit on that household will be $4,000. so they're very concerned, but they were quite happy. they said it isn't every day that the president comes by and hangs out at your house. the message the president was trying to drive home today was aimed directly at congress and using this backdrop to tell a personal story. >> for them to be burdened unnecessarily because democrats and republicans aren't coming together to solve this problem

a big slice of that but disaster relief is being held hostage by the fiscal cliff. how much pressure does this additional pressure put on republicans, seeing chris christie show up at the white house knowing that he needs money for his hard-hit state? >> it's a tremendous amount of pressure. part of what the strategy of think of what we're see hearing is the republicans are becoming increasingly isolated. you think about the discharge position. essentially even if they don't sign on to it, the point is they're going to own this mess. they're the ones who are seen to be, as the public suggests, not willing to make a deal. it is not unreasonable. we've all seen those horrifying images from the devastation of hurricane sandy. it's not unreasonable the governor of the state of new jersey would come and say i need help. americans are going to see that. they see the republicans becoming increasingly sort of isolated and, again, it becomes this question of why are you holding the rest of us hostage for the top 2%? so the problem for the republicans is they don't have a lot of good options at this point to get themselves out of this corner. >> our power panel, my thanks to all three of yo

cliff negotiations continues, they think boehner is trying to warn conservatives about going against any kind of deal he cuts with the white house. so as a warning, boehner is saying i'm going to boot you off your committee if you go against something i do. a lot of conservatives don't like it when he plays hardball. they're going to continue to fight back just like senator demint is doing right now. >> but he's also going to lose some votes on the moderate side. a couple dozen republican house members signed a bipartisan letter that says let's look at all kinds of tax rates, not just the deduction, but tax rates in relation to other spending. so you've got republicans jumping ship on both sides. >> that's exactly right. the speaker is going to have to make a critical choice, because the lines are being drawn in the sand right now here on capitol hill. you have the conservatives who are being booted off the committee. they're very angry with the speaker. they're not going to move at all on tax rates. but you've got a lot of moderates in the republican conference from the suburbs and other places around the country who are saying
